Hi all, this is my first post in this forum. I'm now the proud owner of a Viliv S5 & it's the dog's b's!! I'm working my way around it & I've put Garmin Mobile PC GPS software on it. I cant get it to find the GPS chip though. Does anyone know how to do this? Cheers

Don't choose any gps ports and see what happens... Thats how it was for streedeck... I set it to no gps before it started picking up satelites.

I am using Franson GPS Gate " http://franson.com/gpsgate/" to create a virtual port and it work fine...
In GPS Gate 1- Set incoming to Com1 9600 2- Create 1 or 2 new ports in Windows using the "New hardware" wizard in Control panel. a- Select Hardware Manualy b- Port (COM & LPT) c- Bluetooth or GPS (its better you create more than one port to be shure the system dont reroute them to other bluetooth device upon reboot...) 3- Set Outgoing in GPS Gate to "New Virtual Port" and choose one of the port you just create. 4- Go in "Device manager", erase that port and scan for hardware change. It will discover the setting of GPS Gate.. 5- Start Garmin Mobile PC and scan for GPS... It Should work Now. 6- Set GPS Gate to load on Windows Startup.. If you still have problems I can try to write a better tutorial...

Hey guys
I was trying to get the gps to work on program what was specialy developed for using UMPC in the field for nature study. I´ve the asus R50A and a viliv S5. But for the viliv I coudn´t get a gps connection. But thanks to the Franson program it finally worked. So forget the Asus R50A it really sucks when i compare it to the viliv. Many thanks for the tips! |

Streetdeck doesn't come with the S5 (I wish!). You can get it for $39 without the navigation data, or for $99 with the navigation data from streetdeck.com.
I haven't tried to integrate Garmin Mobile into Streetdeck, but I am sure you could easily get it to launch. I just don't know how easily it will integrate. You can take a look at MP3car.com for other frontends (most of them free). I have been playing around with and will most likely end up using RideRunner since it integrates well with iGuidance 4, which I have had for a couple years on my PDA and laptop. |

I have Igo8 on my HD and will try the PC version as well as IGuidance. I can get Garmin but I don't think it supports TTS.

ok i followed the tutorial closely and i can't get this to work,
i set the gps gate input 9600 and click open and it states GPS data is coming in - good! i go to add new hard ware wizard and manually add new hard lpt & com and select GPS port - Good. It asks me to reboot so i do. go to the gps gate click on output and pull down the menu (i have tried both) virtual com port which i chose 5 or virtual com 5/garmin emulator (generic device) but when it asks for the com port i noticed the "list in device manager (one port only)"is greyed out? then when i look in device manager there is a gps device on com port 5 (which has a yellow exclaimation mark next to it)i remove it as per instructions and scan for hardware changes it doesn't find anything??? i go to garmin and it doesn't find the gps device? please help write a better tutorial or am i missing somthing? Tutorial on Windows 7.
Install Gpsgate normally, no option compatibility. Start GpsGate, in the Setup Wizard click "Advanced setup..." Tab "Input" : select "COM Port", click "Open", set Serial Port "COM1" and Baud Rate "9600". Press OK. Tab "Output" : select "Virtual COM Port", click "Add" and select "COM2", then press "OK". In the middle of tab, select with mouse click sx the "VirtualCOM2" Tab "Advanced" : Check "Active" and "Start GpsGate after boot". Close. Start GarminMobilePC, scanning for Gps, and it select automatically COM2. Enjoy |

In the tab Output, appears two voice, GPS Direct and Virtual COM 2, if you follow the guide and add the VirtualCOM port.
You must select with mouse (sx is the button of mouse, mouse left!). Then you continue to follow the guide. In the garmin, you start GarminMobilePC, is tell not gps, scanning and found the gps automatically on COM2. |

Sorry to be a pain but the lost thing you said... tell not gps, scanning and found the gps automatically on com2
could you be a little clearer? If I stop the scanning I get 3 options the default is USB gps If I choose serial it has com 1,3,4 not 2 And Bluetooth Last edited by theguru; 05-09-2009 at 09:22 AM. |
