You can if you put in your own 3G modem. JKK from JKKmobile did it, another guy did it on myhpmini.com.

I just wanted to clarify something:

wap.cingular as your APN will work with any data plan, including MediaNet, PDA Connect, etc.

isp.cingular has higher speeds and lower latency, and requires a LaptopConnect plan.

Here's how I know this:

After discovering how cool GSM connectivity on a laptop is since I ran an entire computer lab off of a cellphone EDGE connection in Ghana, I bought an unlimited pay-as-you-go MediaNet unlimited Pay and Go MediaNet package. Essentially, you topped off until you had $20 in your account, and then added the package over the phone. I used a HSDPA (Option GT Connect) modem that I found unlocked on eBay for $80. I used the APN wap.cingular. (guest also worked, was faster, but dropped connections sometimes)

I tried using my mom's iPhone SIM card and found that in NYC I got 3x the speed, again using wap.cingular.

I think AT&T boosts the speed for its iPhone and LaptopConnect users. Or perhaps it just restricts the speed for its GoPhone users.

I used this AT&T plan at the start of this school year before the cable guys showed up two weeks late. Never had an issue. Here in New Haven speed was 60 KB/s sustainable. In new york, it was usually 30 KB/s sustainable, 70 max. My mom's iPhone SIM gave me 100 KB/s sustainable. In Europe (Brussels) this summer, I was running 200 KB/s sustainable. I have never had access to a Laptop Connect SIM card. I think I may have had 150 KB/s sustainable with wap.cingular and my PDA Connect SIM that I use in my cell phone, although that was from inside an airplane at JFK!

I do think I got higher bandwidth when I used to tether through my Verizon EVDO REV0 phone, but GSM is so much more flexible, with SIM cards and international access. Just like my cell phone (AT&T/HTC FUZE) my laptop card has quad-band GSM/EDGE and triband UMTS/HSDPA: I believe the GSM frequencies are 850, 900, 1900 and 2100 and the latter 3G frequencies are 850, 1900, and 2100. 2100 is Europe's 3G frequency.

Please correct me if you can prove I'm wrong about any of this!!

I think everyone has figured out by now that this is entirely bunk. I don't want to put the original poster's motivations to question - we'll leave that as it may but I've jumped through all the hoops to no avail. The problem as many have pointed out is that there is no hardware there to support the connection. The codes to activate and the software are all correct, but when it came time to actually fire it up; the hardware could not be detected. I just felt that I should hop on here and definitively say that despite everyone's hard work, it just doesn't work and don't waste your time. I'm sure people wouldn't have bothered with the hardware hack if all you needed was to install a few drivers.

That webcam hardware hack does wonders though...

Default I own the Mini 700

I just purchased the compaq mini 700 which is basicly identical to the mini 1000 with a different logo. I took off the battery and discovered that i too have a sim card slot. So i installed the hp driver (like in the thread) but unfourtuanilty i don't have a AT&T sim card and no varafacation code for the program.

Is there a way to know that i acctually have 3g in my hp mini 700?

Hi. Just had this HP Mini 1099ee Vivienne Tam last week for my wife and I want to share my experience.

By default the WWAN is disabled. The WWAN must be enabled and turned ON from the HP Wireless Assistant. By following the instructions this will install the drivers and will enable you to see the Mobile Broadband Module Ethernet Adaptor from the Device Manager which was not there initially. You will be asked about your network provider.
After the installation, turn off the computer and insert the SIM card. After turning ON again, it took few seconds and the HP Connection Manager will show and finally you can connect to the server. Your landing page is your network provider''s web page with some info regarding your account.

Speed is almost the same as when I am using my N95 8GB with Joikuspot Premium.

Hope this helps in any way.

Cheers.

I recommend skepticism until we get this password so we can confirm it works.
Install the HP Connection Manager from the recovery CD.

The user id & password are embedded in the install.

Unfortunately, it is very clear that this thread was started as a complete hoax. I have installed WWAN antennae and an HP UN2400 WWAN pcie card into my Compaq Mini 110, and I've spent much time researching which models have and don't have WWAN ... and what is 100% clear, is that if your Mini has WWAN, you will know it.

What a shame someone went to the trouble of lying to the world like this. Funny thing is, it sounded really good because there was a lot of truth interlaced through the posts. One thing that is clearly bull, is the idea of unpacking and using only some parts of HP packages.

In order to actually use WWAN, you will need:

an NR version Mini or similar from another manufacturer
a data SIM
an HP UN2400 (or whatever your Mini came with) WWAN 3G pcie card (will show up in device manager even with no drivers)
WWAN antennae
HP WWAN packages
THERE IS NO USERNAME/PASSWORD prompt if you have the above, even if you instal it all yourself ex-post facto. I only got this when I followed the instructions in this silly thread and discovered I actually had none of the needed components. As in there was no WWAN hardware. I had to go buy and instal it ... and then there were no prompts for passwords etc.

Bah humbug.

I know it has been discussed that this thread could possibly be a hoax... but on the off-chance it's not...

From what I have skimmed from this thread, I didn't see anyone who had bought their Mini from Verizon like I did.
I canceled the verizon service, and have since been using my brother's AT&T SIM card on another computer. I just realized my mini had a SIM slot... so I searched on how to use my AT&T SIM card with my mini; hence why I found this thread.

So, I know my computer has the WWAN because I used it with verizon. It is no longer activated because I canceled service.
I installed the file with the Sswisetup program, used the password SvcAct1vate, and it is saying it doesn't detect the SIM card, even after I have turned the comp off and back on with the SIM card in.

What's the verdict on if you can use the SIM card when you know you had the WWAN connection in the past? And one else have a similar story?

Thanks,

Elyse
