Which edition of windows 7 (ie Home Basic, Home Premium, Pro, Ultimate) is suitable for S5 ?

Vaio Drivers and Utilities for P Series - Windows 7

The below link takes you to a page where 'P' Series utility software and drivers for a variety of Operating Systems, including Windows 7, can be downloaded.

It is a US site, and despite referring to the VGN-P530H, the software runs on my European VGN-P11Z with no problems.

I have used the downloads to successfully enable the Fn Hotkeys, enable GPS etc

Does not appear that the Sony UK site is posting the above, goodness knows why.

Trouble with recovery discs on the P :-/

So, I have an external DVD burner, and started to create the recovery discs.
My P is born with Windows 7.

It wants 3 dvds, and the first 2 went fine. But the last disc don't get any further than 94%, with less than a minute left.

What do I do now? Is it possible to burn only the last disc? I have the first two.
Well it just told me that there was a problem with veryfying the disc, and to restart the computer, and try with a new disk. I'll do that, and see what it says...

It seems that it's possible to continue with the last disc, that was missing.

Update: It succesfully made the third disc, in second try, with a new disc.

Second qestion.

I plan to buy Windows 7 upgrade discs, for my Vaio UX380N.
Is it possible to use those discs, to reinstall Windows 7 on my Vaio P to, and then use my P's license on the P? If I decide to nuke the recovery partition on the P, and my recovery discs don't work, of some reason.
All the drivers I can get on Sony's support site.

How to purchase a TTA 20pin USB adapter

Apparently, a TTA 20pin USB adapter would render a lot of services (file transfers and, possibly, power supply). TTA is a korean standard avilable only in Korea. Such a TTA-USB adapter is available on Umid official website. Unfortunately, if you want to purchase this adapter through the Umid official web site, you have to be a Korean resident, since they require your social security number to complete your application and registration. Does anyone know another website (preferably in English) were to buy a TTA 20pin USB adapter ?

Now I found somebody who's trying to sell one and I think it's mine. Is there any way (serial number) to prove whether the device is mine or not?

Overclocking Results (1.6GHz P23G)

Thanks to the overclocking guide here, I've had some time to play.

Overclocking made almost zilch difference to the drive speed (80GB PATA).

SETFSB allowed me to ramp up to 2.11GHz but would start to error often in SuperPi(1M). The most stable SuperPi(1M,4M) was at 2.08GHz, but Windows 7 acted strange once in a while. Using PassMark Burn-in Test, it whittled down the stable clock speed to 1.84GHz.

The base unit is a P23G so 1.6GHz, 1GB, 80GB PATA HDD. No GPS, no WWAN. Using 4GB DUO as full ReadyBoost.

At 1.84GHz, the unit is MUCH more responsive. Battery life I'm unsure of, but will be running BatteryMark soon to see.

Just got my very own Vaio P

Was delivered yesterday :yay:

The modelnumber is VGN-P31ZK/Q.
It's the only model that's available in Denmark, and only in the color black and red.

It's 1.86 GHz, 80 GB hdd, 2 GB RAM, GPS, unlocked WWAN with SIM card, and comes with Windows 7.

I have been lusting after the P since last year, when it was introduced. At that time I choosed a Vaio UX380N instead, because I found a great offer at expansys for the UX, and the P wasn't available in Denmark at that time.

I am very very pleased with the P, it certainly lives up to my expectations, and is no slug, even with Aero turned on. It doesn't run hot at all, and it's very quiet - I can't hear the harddrive under normal circumstances.

Now it lives happily side by side with my UX <3

Problems right out of the box!

Just unboxed a new U820, and I'm liking the hardware so far, but I really hate Vista.

I had to disable my network password to get it to use the internet. Vista seems to think I'm not the administrator on this machine, even though this account is the only one on it.

Auto-rotation of the screen in tablet mode doesn't work.

Windows update seems to not want to update since it doesn't think I'm authorized. I've already ordered my Win 7 upgrade from Fujitsu, so let's hope it arrives fast.

Security warnings galore when I surf the web! :bangshead:

Hardware seems fine, but will take time to get used to. Two-finger typing seems OK so far.

Suggestions and/or condolences appreciated!

Please recommend a navigation software for my SC3

I need a navigation software with New York map for my SC3, which is compatible with its GPS device. I have tried MS Streets & Trips, but it fails to detect the GPS device on all baud rate settings.

Using mini usb for power supply

Like many of you, I have tried using the mini usb for power supply, by connecting it to my desktop. But it failed.

I was wondering whether the usb connection provided by certain universal chargers, like this one : http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

could solve my problem ?

Has anyone succeeded in using the mini usb connection for power supply purposes ?

Alternatively, I have also tried using with a USB male cable connected to my desktop that ends with a plug that perfectly fits the regular power supply of the Umid M1. but it did not work either.

I would pass on the USB Cable, VGA out and the TV out, if I knew I could get cables later (ie. from a local computer store). Are these 3 items fairly standard ?

Using mini usb as usb client

I have downloaded and installed the following XP driver

in order to transform my umid in an external disk.

The installation went without problem. But it does not work: no USB communication with my desktop.

Furthermore, when checking the "device manager" folder of my Umid and looking into the "network adapter" folder, I did not found the usb client device that should have been added to the regular bluetooth and Lan devices.

How does it happen ? Is there a step that I have forgotten. I have read somewhere in this forum that the usb client function was disabled but could be reinstalled in the bios. Does anyone know what steps should be followed to get the usb client function work ? Thanks in advance.

Felt sleeve for Vaio P

This felt sleeve was custom made to fit the P with extended battery.

I love the look and feel of the material. It doesn't look like a laptop case at all. It realy gives good protection too. Because of the open end it's not protected against moisture, but you can order a flap with it. For me a flap would make it to bulky. I mostly make little city trips with the P and for more adventurous travel I use plastic in combination with the sleeve. There are more colours available than showcased on their site. This colour makes a good match with the Granny Smith I eat most every day. Contact was nice and shipping was very fast. the price was €44,95 including shipping (Netherlands).

Fitting:
As you can see in the pictures I could have ordered a tighter fit. The material has a little bit of stretch.
The height (officialy 19.8mm) is 20mm at the closed end and 32mm at the open end to accomodate for the extended battery.
I can even cram the extended battery side in the 20mm end but then the print of the feet will show through the felt.
