This is what vista should have been... Tested on a gateway with all the extras turned on and it is just as fast as xp but with all the vista benefits... Thinking of installing on the u820 but I have so many extras installed and would have to go through the process all over again... Has anyone tested it on their fujitsu? Let us know how it fairs...

I heard of the install time being quick. Like, really quick. Is it?

I just installed Windows 7 on my U810.
More details are here:

Nice, I took the plunge but installed the drivers individually... Didn't know you could alter the compatibility mode issue... (Learned something there ;)) I'm gonna do a reinstall because mine is missing the biometric device (finger print) driver... and a few quirks here and there... How is it running? any bugs?

I realise that the Vista score is to be taken with a pinch of salt - but dont understand why windows 7 gives it a score of 1.5 against vista showing a 3 on mine.

Mindue, vista is showing 5.9 for my aero experience which is mad really.

Are you running 7 natively or on a usb drive like some people? I'll chk mine on my u820 and let you know my score.

Heh... After writing about two pages on the topic of Windows 7 on the U820 and just about ready to create a thread for it, I saw this. Well, I'll spare the excessive rant and try to condense it as best I can:

In terms of superiority, it would definitely have to be XP > Windows 7 > Vista.

XP uses much, much, much less RAM than either, resulting in the ability to go without a page file for a big performance boost and battery saving. I saw W7 using 720MB of RAM on a fresh reboot after tweaking it significantly and cutting back a large portion of services and programs. That is simply too much. Even Vista had less (not much; 650MB or thereabouts if I recall).

In the end, I can't use it with W7 like I can with XP. I can't watch 2mbps H264/AVC video (med-quality 720p) at all, because there's just too much overhead (same problem as on Vista, but worse - probably because of a lack of optimization for drivers or codecs). I can't use Firefox and Photoshop while chatting on IRC or through PMs while listening to music over the network... or even /close/ to that.

The keyboard light doesn't seem to work? I don't know; it's a pointless thing to have but if it's there it might as well work. The biometric scanner is /recognized/, at least, but doesn't work. The rest of the drivers work as well as they do on Vista.

Battery life is also not great (7 hours on XP versus 6 hours on W7 and 5.5 hours on Vista with the extended), after tweaking each of them pretty well.

I, actually have very little positive to say about it. The best I can say is: "The onscreen keyboard is very, very nice and would really enjoy having it backported". Aside from that, the screen orientation is fast, the zoom is good, and tablet screen support is good. But that's the same as if you're on Vista, so no big news.

For users of the U820, it's just probably not worth changing to right now. If you're an optimistic sort, it might be in the end, but not now. XP, is, as the UMPC-related saying goes, still the best choice (many people are probably tired of hearing that, right?).

I heard of the install time being quick. Like, really quick. Is it?

It's not "really" quick, no. It takes the better part of an hour. Comparable to XP. Certainly faster than Vista (this is a common theme).

But even if it installed instantly, it's not like you're going to be installing it very often, right? So it shouldn't matter if it takes 20 minutes or 70 minutes. And even then, it's not indicative of how the system itself is going to be.

Mindue, vista is showing 5.9 for my aero experience which is mad really.

5.9 on Vista's experience nonsense just means it doesn't support it or have a correct answer; that is, 5.9 is its default or unknown value. It could really be a 3.5 or a 1.2.

On another thought...

Windows 7 might be worthwhile on the next set of Atom handhelds, like that deliciously sexy little OQO 2+, or the aesthetically well-designed, but function-lacking, silly-ad-campaigned, expensive Vaio P, with their 2GB of RAM and DX9 / 1080p (why don't they use something more concrete, like "8mbps" or something? You can get 800kbps 1080p, or you can get 15mbps 1080p... one obviously requires a lot more decoding!) chipsets. Or, of course, more powerful systems that run Vista like it wasn't there, including desktops.

Everybody feels differently about this, it seems. I'll just post a few comments, without going too far into it. :P

Not particularly surprising. Microsoft has already said that Vista (and presumably Windows 7) try to cache more things in memory (in addition to things like SuperFetch), so Vista will always use more memory than XP. So if you're talking just about memory usage, you're comparing different memory management schemes - not quite apples and oranges, but something along those lines.

I can't watch 2mbps H264/AVC video (med-quality 720p) at all, because there's just too much overhead (same problem as on Vista, but worse - probably because of a lack of optimization for drivers or codecs).
I didn't get far enough into Windows 7 to comment on some of this (I'll touch on that later), but one thing I did notice was that using ffmpeg on Vista didn't lead to satisfactory performance, but CoreAVC did better. I've not tried out PowerDVD, but I've heard that has a better optimized h.264 decoder as well.

The keyboard light doesn't seem to work? I don't know; it's a pointless thing to have but if it's there it might as well work.
? I did get this working...?

The problem I had was that I'm having ridiculous problems with the Intel GMA 500. I would encounter the Desktop Window Manager crashing due to the Intel driver as soon as I'd log in, which meant that I couldn't use any of the Aero effects in Windows 7 (like taskbar previews and such), but what was worse (for me) is that Remote Desktop would also crash due to the Intel driver. So, that ended that experiment pretty quickly for me.

Hi, I just loaded windows 7 beta (build 7000) on my u810 and my touchscreen is really off. When I try to calibrate it, some of my touches don't work and I can't get an accurate touch on some of the crosses. Has anyone successfully calibrated there screen, and if so, can you help me?

Well I have the u820 and installed my vista driver disc after setting the compatibility to vista. I used the tablet calibration tool found in control panel to calibrate the screen... Everything works like a charm except for no aero due the the gma crashing and I can never use the finger print.

Well unfortunately I bought mine off of ebay because I found a great deal, but it did not come with any of the disks so I don't have my drivers =/

Just donload the drivers/software from fujitsu's website.... you'd have to install them one by one... This driver install order is for xp from umpcportal, but it might work for vista too... hope this helps.
Install Fujitsu Drivers and Applications in the following sequence in order to get the Fujitsu Button works.

Hi, so I've gotten basically everything working and I really like windows 7 but I still have a few problems. My bluetooth and fingerprint sensor don't work. Now I've installed the drivers for both of them and they both have their own problems. My bluetooth does not show up anywhere? When I tried to install the driver it kept telling me to plug in my bluetooth device and would not go any further. Now I know it's there because it's enabled in my bios, but windows just can't find it. The fingerprint sensor is installed and shows up but I can't use it. Maybe I'm just missing something, but when I go in control pannel and hit "biometric devices" nothing shows up (but it is there in the device manager). When I try "Fingerprint Sensor" it lets me adjusts one tab of settings but nowhere does it let me scan my finger. Also I don't know if this matters but under "Devices and Printers" my touch panel and fingerprint sensor show up as unspecified?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I'm sorry I actually forgot one other thing... My rotation button does not work either. The other two buttons work perfect as does the function button. When I hit the rotate button it says "Error in CUISDK initialization". I don't know what that means but I have installed the button drivers/utitlity so I don't know why thats not working?

Thanks again for any help!

make sure your bluetooth switch is on when you install the driver... that should fix the insert bluetooth adapter message. Thats all I have buddy :)

Fingerprint driver:

Make sure you uninstall the fingerprint driver and omnipass first.

Anyone install RC1 build 7057 or build 7061?

If so, how did they work for you??

Thanks!

:)

Well....went ahead and installed Win7 RC1 Build 7057 today on my U820...install seemed to go OK....

However, now when I boot up it gets part way through the process, and then I see the light blue background screen and then display goes wacky on me, it flashes every second or so back and forth between the background screen and a completely black screen, etc...never stops, so have to shutdown U820 by holding power switch to on...

When I reboot, I used safe mode and then it will boot up to normal desktop and I can use U820.

UPDATE: Did a google search on this kind of problem, seems pretty clear that it's related to display/driver issues or computer trying to check if there's an external monitor connected or not....

I went into Device Manager and disabled Intel GMA500 and then rebooted...but still same problem....

Any ideas as to how to fix this so that I don't have to boot up in Safe Mode????

Thanks!

I had the flashing screen problem, too after installing Win7 RC 7100 in Vista Upgrade mode. I ended up doing a clean install instead, and that fixed it. That installed the Win7 GMA500 driver, which actually seems to be useful for video playback. Under Vista, I couldn't even playback DVD video on this thing.

ArchiMark, I agree with jimre, an inplace upgrade win win 7 beta led to the same issues for me, but a clean install worked fine. It was funny, it defaulted to 640X480 16 colors at first but then did an upgrade and found an Intel Video driver.
